The Colors of Labradors

From the AKC standard:

The Labrador Retriever coat colors are black, yellow and chocolate. Any other color or a combination of colors is a disqualification. A small white spot on the chest is permissible, but not desirable. White hairs from aging or scarring are not to be misinterpreted as brindling. Black - Blacks are all black. A black with brindle markings or a black with tan markings is a disqualification. Yellow - Yellows may range in color from fox-red to light cream, with variations in shading on the ears, back, and underparts of the dog. Chocolate - Chocolates can vary in shade from light to dark chocolate. Chocolate with brindle or tan markings is a disqualification.

If you happen to come across some breeders websites, they will try to convince you that Labs come in colors like sedge.  Sedge is a color allowed in Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, NOT Labradors.

You are being deceived into thinking this is a special color.  Re-read the standard.  No where does it mention sedge.  Chocolates can vary in shade from light to dark chocolate.  Period. A reputable breeder does not use special terms to describe color.

Along with the varying shades of chocolate, Labradors come in various shades of yellow.  Not white, not polar bear, not honey, not golden.  We have an article dealing with the various shades of yellows HERE. Don't be deceived by these marketing tactics.  Yellows may range in color from fox-red to light cream, with variations in shading on the ears, back, and underparts of the dog.  Period.  A reputable breeder does not use special terms to describe color.

Now some silver breeders have created their own registry, the Silver Labrador Registry.  This is not a recognized registry such as AKC (American Kennel Club).  Anyone can start a registry, take money and try to legitimize themselves.  Do not be deceived into thinking this is anything more than that.

The Labrador Retriever Club (LRC), the parent club of the Labrador Retriever in the US states their position on "silver" Labradors:

"There is no genetic basis for the silver gene in Labradors.  The silver color is a disqualification under the Standard for the breed.  The LRC does not recognize, accept or condone the sale or advertising of any Labrador as a silver Labrador.  The club opposes the practice of registering silver as chocolate."

Silver Labradors are not a legitimate, acceptable color.  Period.  Do not allow yourself to be deceived.
